The National Film and Television School (NFTS) is a prestigious institution for film, television and games. The school is famed for its Oscar and BAFTA-winning alumni, as well as its “industry first” ethos which translates to a graduate employment rate of over 90%.
To remain at the forefront of the industry and equip its students with advanced, relevant skills in virtual production, NFTS partnered with Target3D to design and specify a next-generation camera tracking and virtual production solution powered by Unreal Engine.

The Challenge
As a leader in creative education, NFTS required a flexible, future‑proof system that could serve both as a teaching tool for students and as a professional‑grade VP solution for the productions taking place within its studio.
The technology needed to integrate with the school’s studio space which includes an 8m x 4m 1.9mm pixel pitch LED volume, ensuring maximum versatility for a range of production and training environments.

NFTS tasked Target3D with developing a solution that combines real‑time camera tracking and software-based chroma keying without the need for third‑party hardware. The system also needed to be powerful enough for professional productions, whilst remaining accessible for students new to virtual production, and built on scalable architecture that utilised the whole space.
The Solution
Target3D conducted a full site survey to confirm the space’s infrastructure and ensure the system could be deployed to the highest professional standards.
Through consultation with NFTS, Target3D proposed a Stype RedSpy tracking system combined with the disguise suite, providing a virtual production solution tailored to both training and professional workflows.

The RedSpy offers plug‑and‑play lens data encoding, fast startup with no recalibration and a compact design for versatile setups. Paired with StypeLand and its integrated GreenKiller chroma keyer, it delivers a broadcast‑ready Unreal Engine environment without external keying.
One Controller streamlines multi‑engine workflows through an intuitive web UI, while a 10GB network and Brainstorm DXD universal clock ensure high performance and precise sync.
Target3D also supplied a bespoke workstation powered by an AMD Threadripper PRO CPU and NVIDIA RTX 4090 GPU, tailored for SDI workflows to deliver integration with broadcast infrastructure and to handle demanding real-time production pipelines.
The Result
NFTS is now welcoming its 2026 cohort. For the school, this installation represents a step forward in ensuring its students and professionals remain at the forefront of emerging production technologies. With a virtual production solution that balances ease of use with industry leading technical accuracy, NFTS is empowering the next generation of filmmakers.
The Feedback
“I think this new install is also a massive upgrade, because of disguise mainly. I’m super excited to work with disguise. For our LED processors, which is Brompton, through the workflow or the chain of how our virtual production works, everything has to go through the processor in the end, so if the processor isn’t up for what you want to do, then you’re just really stuck, and we never had an issue with Brompton.
I think the week after the install was finished there were already three or four shoots trying to come in. I feel like everyone at the school really wants to get in there, like, has to see how it works for their shoots.”
